The quiet focus required to put paint on canvas and create a piece of art transports 13-year-old Ally to a state of blissful Zen. So, Ally is in her happy place at The Painters Lounge in downtown Phoenix as she works alongside studio owner Dina Murphy. “When I paint,” says the seventh-grader, “it helps me calm myself down. I paint at home sometimes when I’m frustrated. “I do like to draw roses, and people and, sometimes, sunsets,” Ally says. When not painting, Ally says she likes to “sing, dance, sleep and watch the TV for a long time.”
Ally says her most treasured possession is her collection of rocks – “shiny rocks, dull rocks, smooth rocks, rough rocks, different colored rocks.” She has rocks from most places she has visited, including the Grand Canyon and Disneyland. “I keep them in this little bin,” Ally says. “I think I may have about 100 rocks.”
Ally was recently matched with a mentor and she appreciates the relationship. “It’s good to have someone to talk to and she’s always there for me when I need help,” Ally says. But, she really wants a forever family. The best fit for Ally would be a household headed by a single mother where the teen would be the only child or the youngest child.
